Session Notes - September 30, 2007 Session

Starting with the October 7th session, the club will meet at the home of the Director located at 223 W. Weisshorn St. in Oro Valley (also in the Highlands Community) from 1PM until 7PM.

This session marked the ninth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!

We welcomed Bob and Carol Knouse into the tournament division this week and look forward to their company and to watching their scrabble games grow as the weeks go by.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 26 games in which we scored 9,804 points for a 377.0769 point-per-game average. Of the 30 recorded bingos we played, three were phonies that went unchallenged.

Dee Keys and Isabel Keranen made up our recreational division this week and Dee could only hang around for one game. Hopefully we'll be able to find some more competition for these ladies as the snowbirds return to the Highlands.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first regular contest was the Happy Birthday!!!!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that begins with either "M" or "K". Richard Spence submitted MISTY (24 pts), Bob Knouse played ME for 26, Judy Carlock played the bingo MALTOSE but didn't submit it (or the score) for consideration and Ed Saunders plopped down MESTESO for 81 points. Ed celebrates the diversity in his life with the $2.25 prize.

The second was the Critters Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of some sort of critter. Richard Spence and Ed Saunders split this prize with 36 point plays of WIVERNS and JAY respectively. Recognizing the difference in style points between WIVERNS and JAY, Ed cedes the extra penny to Richard. Richard rides his dragon home with $1.13 while Ed flies off with $1.12.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $65.76 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (October 7, 2007) shall feature the following contests:
Thinking About You Contest - On thursday, October 4th, in Phoenix, longtime Tucson scrabbler Robert Whitcomb underwent brain surgery to remove a malignant glioma from his parietal lobe. In light of this occasion, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with either "R" or "W".(e.g. RECOVERY, WISHFUL, RIANTLY, WOOMERA, RAPIDITY, WALLABY, RASBORA, WICKIUPS, RENDZINA, WHIMBREL, etc.).
New Home Contest - In honor of the club's move into a new home, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains both of the letters "N" and "H" somewhere within it. (e.g. TREPHINE, ERRHINE, NEATHERD, HANDSOME, NOURISH, HOATZIN, DOZENTH, ZITHERNS, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.87 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
