This session marked the thirty-fourth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!
We welcomed Sarah Jacobson and Jason
Sommer on their first visits to the Northwest Club. Both graced the
tables at the Airport Club on Thursday as well.
Sarah has played at the Airport Club in the past as a visitor from Los Angeles
and recently made a permanent move to Tucson. She is now checking out the
other Scrabble options available to her. (she made the long trek up here
from the far southeast side of town for the session).
Jason is a long-time member of the Tucson Scrabble extended family visiting
from Solvang, California. We expect to see him periodically and he will
always be welcome at our clubs.
We were also happy to see Richard Spence take a brief respite from his preparations for the scholastic National MathCounts Championships in May to play a little Scrabble this week.
The goodies table included John Spence's chocolate chip cookies, macaroons courtesy of Monique Kornell, crackers and cheese, nuts, raisins, and chips today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.
The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 30 games in which we scored 11,204 points for a 373.4667 point-per-game average. Of the 36 recorded bingos we played, none were phoneys that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
Since neither of them had an entry last time around, we featured reruns of last week's two regular contests this week.
The first was the Fabrics Of Our Lives Contest for the highest scoring
play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere
within it, a fabric of some kind. Ed Saunders kind of cottoned to the rerun
idea, playing the D/D DUNGAREE for 90 points and
slipping the $5.25 prize into the pocket of his dungarees.
The second was the "IC" A Contest for the highest scoring play
of a word that contains the letter couplet "IC", in that order,
somewhere within it. Sarah Jacobson saw MICE on
her rack for 18 pts, Richard Spence's PICA was
worth 23 pts, but Ed Saunders saw his way clear to the $5.25 payoff with
his OPTICS for 48 pts.
As I informed you once earlier in these notes, Ed Saunders picked up the $3.91 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot for his 72 point play of REINFORMS, played from the existing "RE".
Ed's $14.41 total winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $301.37 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.
The next session (May 4, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• The War Of The Roses Contest - On May 4,
1471, the Battle of Tewkesbury was fought in England's War of the Roses.
In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to
the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name
of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a flower or flowering
plant. (e.g. ABUTILON, ASTILBE, MAGNOLIA, ORCHIDS, VERBENA, SALVIAS, OPUNTIAS,
CLEMATIS, DAHLIAS, ROSEwood, MAYBUSH, HAWKWEED, BLUEBELL, etc.)
• Here, Fishy, Fishy! Contest - A quarter of
dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it,
a fish or other underwater creature. (e.g. SEAROBIN, TUNICATE, OCTOPUS,
INCONNU, MOJARRA, RATTAIL, OARFISH, MOLLIES, NAUTILI, REMORAS, PIRANHA,
RORQUALS, SEAHORSE, CUCUMBER, RATFISH, LOBSTER, etc.)

plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.

a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
