Session Notes - October 14, 2007 Session

IMPORTANT SCHEDULE CHANGE!!! Due to the participation of the club's Director in the Tucson Halloween Costume Scrabble Tournament on October 26-28, the October 28th session of the Northwest Scrabble Club will be cancelled. Club play will resume as normal on November 4th.

This session marked the twelfth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 42 games in which we scored 15,040 points for a 358.0952 point-per-game average. Of the 40 recorded bingos we played, three were phonies that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first regular contest was the Great Debates Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is reflective of American Politics. No one submitted a valid entry for this contest so it will run again when we return on November 4th. $6.00 awaits a winning candidate.

The second was the Body Parts Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a human body part. Not having defined "human body part" as a specific anatomical portion of the human body, the envelope was pushed. . . .with that in mind, Richard Spence submitted "ID" (23 pts) which is defined in OSPD4 as "a part of the psyche". Psyche is defined as "the mental structure of a person". ID is therefore a valid entry. Ed Saunders submitted "NATURES" (72 pts). NATURE is defined as "the essential qualities of a person or thing", and would also qualify under the same broad interpretation of the contest criteria. Ed wins this one and donates the $6.00 prize back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.50 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $93.48 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (November 4, 2007) shall feature the following contests:
REPEAT: The Great Debates Contest - On October 21, 1960, the fourth and final presidential debate between Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy took place while millions watched. In honor of this historic occasion, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is reflective of American politics. (e.g. CAMPAIGN, PROMISES, DEMOCRAT, REPUBLIC, CONGRESS, PLATFORM, PARTIES, ELEPHANT, DONKEYS, SCANDAL, NEGATIVE, AIRPORT, BATHROOM, IMPEACH, etc.). To qualify for this contest, you must write a sentence connecting your word to politics in some manner. Make the connection and you may be called upon to give an acceptance speech at campaign headquarters..
Body Parts Contest Revisited - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a specific anatomical portion of the human body. (e.g. SCALENI, TRAPEZII, OVERHEAD, PINKEYE, DOGEARS, PHALANGE, CLAVICLE, FOOTREST, SIDEARM, LUMBARS, URETERAL, etc.)
TransOXonia Contest - On November 4, 1411, Khalil Sultan, the 37-year old ruler of Transoxonia, passed away. In memory of this solemn occasion, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the couplet "OX", in that order, somewhere within it . (e.g. OXALISES, DETOXIFY, FOXTAILS, BOXCARS, EQUINOX, SMALLPOX, OXPECKER, PHLOXES, FIREBOX, FOXFIRE, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $4.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $5.42 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
