Starting with the October 7th session, the club will meet at the home of the Director located at 223 W. Weisshorn St. in Oro Valley (also in the Highlands Community) from 1PM until 7PM.
IMPORTANT SCHEDULE CHANGE!!! Due to the participation of the club's Director in the Tucson Halloween Costume Scrabble Tournament on October 26-28, the October 28th session of the Northwest Scrabble Club will be cancelled. Club play will resume as normal on November 4th.
This session marked the eleventh of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008
season!
This was our second session in our new home and, so far, comments have all
been positive on the new facility. This week we introduced a small Scrabble
showcase to make Scrabble equipment available to club players at a price
close to actual cost. We will be looking into expanding our selection and
stock in future weeks.
We want to thank Carol and Bob Knouse who provided sliced apples, chips, and a wonderful dip for the group. And thanks, also, to Joni Perry who also showed up bearing goodies. The group made a pretty good dent in what was provided (and I'm munching happily on the leftovers as I type. . . .).
This week we enjoyed the company of new players Janis Clem, Dennis Levy, and Brenda Beeley. Janis and Dennis join the tournament division while Brenda and Joni Perry were our only recreational players for this session.
The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 36 games in which we scored 13,457 points for a 373.8056 point-per-game average. Of the 43 recorded bingos we played, four were phonies that went unchallenged.
Brenda Beeley and Joni Perry dropped in for recreational games. Joni played Bob Knouse, and Brenda logged games with Richard Spence and Dennis Levy.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first regular contest was the Sarah Winnemucca Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is of Indian origin or reflective of Native American Culture. Ed Saunders submitted "The braves stretched buffalo skins over the TIPI to insulate it for the winter." (12 pts) Richard Spence's entry was put in the hands of an impartial judge to decide if it met the criteria for the contest. "The Paiute woman put the UNFIRED pottery on the table." (80 pts) gets the okay and wins the $4.50 pot.
The second was the "NO" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the couplet "NO", in that order, somewhere within it. Judy Carlock played the bingo SIGNORE but. . . .failed to enter or record her score for the play. Janis Clem claims the $4.50 prize (NO foolin') with NOR for 12 points. NO doubt about it, it pays to enter.
For the second consecutive week, Ed Saunders claimed the 100+Play and the 9+Bingo Progressive Jackpots. From a rack of ABEGOPY, Ed pulled out the bingo PAGEBOY and played it on a TWS with two hooks for 105 pts. In his last game, with a rack of BGINORS, Ed was looking for an open "E" to play SOBERING when he noticed an open "AD" sitting in the second row. Switching strategies, Ed laid down ADSORBING for the bingo and the Jackpot. Ed picks up $1.12 for each of the two Jackpots.
No one cashed in on the other two Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.12 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $87.48 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.
The next session (October 21, 2007) shall feature the following contests:
• The Great Debates Contest - On October 21,
1960, the fourth and final presidential debate between Richard M. Nixon
and John F. Kennedy took place while millions watched. In honor of this
historic occasion, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player
who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is reflective of American
politics. (e.g. CAMPAIGN, PROMISES, DEMOCRAT, REPUBLIC, CONGRESS, PLATFORM,
PARTIES, ELEPHANT, DONKEYS, SCANDAL, NEGATIVE, AIRPORT, BATHROOM, IMPEACH,
etc.). To qualify for this contest, you must write a sentence connecting
your word to politics in some manner. Make the connection and you may be
called upon to give an acceptance speech at campaign headquarters..
•Body Parts Contest - A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of
a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a human
body part. (e.g. SCALENI, TRAPEZII, OVERHEAD, PINKEYE, DOGEARS, PHALANGE,
CLAVICLE, FOOTREST, SIDEARM, LUMBARS, URETERAL, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.36
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $3.92 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of
9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
