Starting with the October 7th session, the club will meet at the home of the Director located at 223 W. Weisshorn St. in Oro Valley (also in the Highlands Community) from 1PM until 7PM.
This session marked the tenth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008
season!
This was our first session in our new home and from all appearances, it
went fairly smoothly. We introduced a couple of new things into the club
venue, including access to a computerized word judge program (Zyzzyva) and
a club bulletin board which will feature a variety of club and Scrabble
information over the coming weeks. There are some other projects in the
works as well. Watch this space for news!
The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 24 games in which we scored 9,108 points for a 379.50 point-per-game average. Of the 27 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.
Dee Keys and Isabel Keranen couldn't make it this week, but Elinor Horner dropped by to see if any other recreational players were around and to check out the new facilities.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first regular contest was the Thinking About You Contest (remembering Robert Whitcomb in his ongoing fight against brain cancer) for the highest scoring play of a word that begins with either "R" or "W". Judy Carlock snuck in a 71 point phoney of rattlier*, but Ed Saunders served up a RAMEQUIN worth 75 points and gets the $3.75 cheese.
The second was the New Home Contest (in honor of the club's move into a
permanent venue) for the highest scoring play of a word that contains both
of the letters "N" and "H" somewhere within it. Judy
Carlock played a likely winner in DOLPHINS but
didn't enter or note the score on her scorecard. Monique Kornell thought
she saw the light through her 79 point SASHING.
Ed Saunders, however, agreed to throw some 80 point Scrabble SHINDIES
at his home and claims the $3.75 prize.
Judy Carlock and Ed Saunders split the 100+Point Play Progressive Jackpot
with a couple of double-doubles, Judy scoring 102 points with CaLaMITY
and Ed chalking up 109 with BEREAVE. They split
the $1.49 jackpot .75/.74.
Ed Saunders had a rack of EFORTU? and was looking for an open "E" or "N" to play FOURTEEN. He found both of them together "EN" and made the logical switch to the nine-letter FOURTEENs for 72 points and the $1.49 purse in the 9+Bingo Progressive Jackpot.
No one cashed in on the other two Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $76.24 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.
The next session (October 14, 2007) shall feature the following contests:
• Sarah Winnemucca Contest - On October 14,
1891, Sarah Winnemucca, daughter of Chief Winnemucca of the Northern Paiute
people and the first Native American woman to procure a copyright and publish
(Life Among The Paiutes, Their Wrongs And Claims) in the English language,
died at her sister's home in Nevada. In memory of this occasion, a quarter
of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest
scoring play of a word that is of Indian origin or reflective of Native
American culture. (e.g. SAGAMORE, WAPITIS, KACHINA, WARRIOR, SANNOPS, WAMPUMS,
NOMADIC, SPIRITS, TOMAHAWK, etc.). To qualify for this contest, you must
write a sentence connecting your word to Indian culture in some manner.
Make the connection and the Great Spirit may authorize us to give you much
wampum.
•"NO" Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that contains the couplet "NO", in that order,
somewhere within it. (e.g. NOWHERE, LORGNON,
SNOWMAN, GENOMES, NOBILITY,
AMORINO, GNOMISTS, DOMINOS,
etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $2.24
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $2.80 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of
9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
