Session Notes - May 29, 2008 Session

This session marked the twenty-ninth week of NSA Club #565's 2007-2008 season!

Since this season will be our first full season as a two-tiered club with both a Recreational and a separate Tournament Rules Division. There will be some tweaking done as the Recreational Division develops.

Sandra Masel paid us an always welcome visit this week. She is in town from Australia visiting her daughter in Tucson. Sandra somehow manages to find her way to the local Scrabble club during these visits and we're always delighted to see her.

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 4 tournament division players who played 22 games in which we scored 8,056 points for a 366.18 points per game average. Of the 29 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.

We featured two regular contests this week

The first regular contest was the "GO" For The Gold Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "GO", in that order, somewhere within it. Karen Lundeen tried the phony gors for 12 pts, Ed Saunders changed the "S" to an "E" and took a stab with GORE for 16, but Sandra Masel just said "GO away!" and went away with the $3.00 prize for her 24 pt play of GO. Sandra kindly donated her $3.00 prize back to the club kitty.

The second regular contest was the Game Is The Name Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name, either first or second name, of a person. Sandra Masel played JAY for 26 pts, but Pat Madea and Ed Saunders both made 35 point plays, Pat dropping the name SQUIRE for 35 and Ed promoting MAJOR for 35. Pat and Ed split the $3.00 pot for this contest.

Ed's $1.50 winnings, along with Sandra's $3.00 winnings, will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $187.30 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (June 5, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• LOcation, LOcation, LOcation! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "LO", in that order, somewhere within it. (e.g. LOCATION, LORGNON, NIELLOED, ALOPECIA, ABALONE, LONELIER, CEMBALO, BOMBLOAD, PUMELOS, KEITLOA, BUMMALO, ETIOLOGY, LOIDING, GLOXINIA, etc.).
• The Hydration Is Important Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a beverage of some kind.(e.g. WATERzooi, GINgelli, MADEIRA, MILKwort, LEMONADE, PEPSIne, COKEhead, seaWATER, BEERiest, ALEwife, AKVAVIT, SANGRIAS, BRANDIES, verJUICE, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $12.49 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $7.08 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $5.41 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $3.36 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
