Session Notes - December 27, 2007 Session

I'm saddened to announce the passing of Robert Whitcomb, the driving force behind the founding of NSA Club # 565 in Tucson. A strong teacher of the game and a fierce competitior, his presence will be missed in the world of Arizona Scrabble. Our contests this week were played in his memory. . . .

This session marked the eighth week of NSA Club #565's 2007-2008 season!

Since this season will be our first full season as a two-tiered club with both a Recreational and a separate Tournament Rules Division. There will be some tweaking done as the Recreational Division develops.

Phyllis and Richard Spence made their first appearance of the season at the Airport Club, taking advantage of the holiday break from their normal activities.

We were joined by 3 tournament division players who played 8 games. Of the 11 recorded bingos we played, two were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Phyllis Spence and Leslie Weber comprised our recreational division this week. Both played the majority of their games against tournament division players. Click here for a roster of Recreational Players

Some numbers and whatnot for this tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

Our two regular contests this week were played in the memory of Bob Whitcomb, who died of cancer on December 21st.

The first memorial contest was The "RW" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "R" and "W" in any order somewhere within it. Mickey Matz played WORT against Richard Spence for 15 pts. Richard then back-hooked VERSE onto Mickey's WORT to form WORTS/VERSE and pick up the $2.25 prize with the resultant 41 pt play.

The second memorial contest was the "Final Play" Contest for the highest scoring final play of a game. Ed Saunders and Mickey Matz both had 18 point out plays. Ed scored 12 for TARS and picked up 6 from the opponent's rack. Mickey scored 14 for DICE and added 4 from the opponent's rack. Mickey wins this, and the $2.25 prize, by virtue of the higher scoring basic play.

We also ran one repeat contest this week with Richard Spence picking up the $2.25 prize for the Mix"ING" Up The End"ING" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "I", "N", and "G" in any order OTHER than "ING" somewhere within it. Richard scored 68 points with his bingo ORGANISE to win.

Ed Saunders picked up the $6.98 Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot for the club kitty with his 122 point play of VAGARIES through the "R". Phyllis Spence also had a Triple-Triple, playing FEMININE for 149 points but, as a recreational player, did not contribute to the prize fund and was thus ineligible to collect any prize money for her play.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $45.23 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (January 3, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
I'm Flying! Contest - On January 3, 1496, Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tested a flying machine. In honor of this occasion, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to flight or to air in general (e.g. FANJETS, AERONAUT, WINDSOCK, THERMALS, ZEPHYRS, MIGRATED, ZEPPELIN, FLEDGING, SOARING, TAILWIND, AEROFOIL, CATAPULT, etc.). Any "iffy" words (not having an obvious connection) must be supported by a sentence connecting that word to flight or air in general.
The "Q" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word containing the letter "Q" somewhere within it.
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $5.22 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $7.64 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $5.59 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
