This session marked the twenty-fourth week of NSA Club #565's 2007-2008 season!
We welcomed three old friends back to the club this week.
Sarah Jacobson, who played with us several times
as a visitor from California, made her first appearance at club as a Tucson
resident. Having recently moved here from L.A., Sarah plans to be a Thursday
night club regular, visit the Northwest Club on occasion, and participate
in the Tucson tournaments. She is a welcome addition to the family in all
three cases.
Jason Sommer, a long-time member of the Tucson
Scrabble extended family from Solvang, California, dropped in to visit old
"fremds*" (Jason, himself, is one of the "fremdlier*"
people that I know). He plans to visit the Northwest Club, as well, before
he heads back out to California.
And last, but definitely not least, Judith Whitcomb
made her first appearance at club since May of 2007. A lot has happened
in the interim and Judith does not expect to return to club as a regular
player, but indicated that she might stop in on days when she has other
business in Tucson. We look forward to those opportunities to visit and
play with one of our founding members.
Since this season will be our first full season as a two-tiered club with both a Recreational and a separate Tournament Rules Division. There will be some tweaking done as the Recreational Division develops.
In the Tournament session, we were joined by 6 tournament division players who played 24 games in which we scored 8,718 points for a 363.25 points per game average. Of the 26 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.
There were no recreational games played this week. Click here for a roster of Recreational Players
Some numbers and whatnot for this tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week
The first regular contest was the Oh, You Can Call Me "JAY" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "J". The most interesting entry was Jason Sommer's 16 point play of FJELD. Pat Madea played a JOKE for 20, Judith Whitcomb tried a JURIST for 26, Jason Sommer betrayed his FJELD play with JUDAS for 31, and Ed Saunders capped off the scoring with his TAJ for 38 and the $4.50 win.
The second regular contest was the Here, Fishy, Fishy Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a fish or other underwater creature. There were no entries in this contest this week, so we'll toss the $4.50 prize back in the water for next week and see if we can reel in a winner then.
Ed's $4.50 winnings go back to the club kitty.
Pat Madea called in some IOUS this week and played 2 bingos that ended in
those letters. One of them was NOXIOUS, the other
was FELONIOUS (makes ya wonder where Pat invests
his money. . . .). The FELONIOUS one cleaned
out the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot and earned Pat an honest $14.72. Pat
played his rack of ILOSU?? from an existing FE
for 70 points to pick up the cash.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and
each shall have $1.12 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $155.80
in prizes this season. Click
here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.
The next session (May 1, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• It's An ILL Wind Contest - On May 1, 1956,
Dr. Jonas Salk's polio vaccine was made available to the public. In honor
of this occasion, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player
who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or
incorporates the name of within it, some sort of illness, disease, or medical
ailment. (e.g. ILEITIS, PLEURISY, DIARRHEA, MALARIA, PINKEYE, LUMBAGO, GANGRENE,
ASTHENIA, FLUency, ePOXies, COLDish, BERIBERI, etc.).
• Here, Fishy, Fishy! Contest - $4.50 plus
a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in
the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates
the name of within it, a fish or other underwater creature. (e.g. SEAROBIN,
TUNICATE, OCTOPUS, INCONNU, MOJARRA, RATTAIL, OARFISH, MOLLIES, NAUTILI,
REMORAS, PIRANHA, RORQUALS, SEAHORSE, CUCUMBER, RATFISH, LOBSTER, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $9.13
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $3.72 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $2.05 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of
9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
