Session Notes - December 20, 2007 Session

I'm saddened to announce the passing of Robert Whitcomb, the driving force behind the founding of NSA Club # 565 in Tucson. A strong teacher of the game and a fierce competitior, his presence will be missed in the world of Arizona Scrabble. Our contests next week will be played in his memory. . . .

This session marked the seventh week of NSA Club #565's 2007-2008 season!

This season will be our first full season as a two-tiered club with both a Recreational and a separate Tournament Rules Division. There will be some tweaking done as the Recreational Division develops.

We were joined by 2 tournament division players who played 4 games. Of the 5 recorded bingos we played, none was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Pat Madea comprised our recreational division this week. Pat played all of his games against tournament division players. Click here for a roster of Recreational Players

Some numbers and whatnot for this tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first regular contest was The "OUT" Of Options Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "O", "U", and "T" in any order OTHER than "OUT" somewhere within it. FUTON and FOUNT both found their way onto the board in the first game, but Mickey Matz followed those up with QUOTED for 32 pts and Ed Saunders bingoed with MOUNTERS for 68 pts and the $2.25 win.

The second regular contest was the Mix"ING" Up The End"ING" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "I", "N", and "G" in any order OTHER than "ING" somewhere within it. There were no entries for this contest and it will run again next week with $2.25 await"ING" the eventual winner

Ed's $2.25 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty along with the $7.50 Sandra Masel picked up in last week's contests. Thanks, Ed and Sandra.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.37 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $31.50 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (December 27th) shall feature the following contests:
"RW" Contest - In memory of Robert Whitcomb, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "R" and "W" in any order somewhere within it (e.g. WRITINGS, RAINBOW, WARFARIN, REDOWAS, WINDROWS, ROADWAYS, WARRENER, TWANGIER, PROWESS, COWRITES, etc.).
The "Final Play" Contest - Also in memory of Robert Whitcomb, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring final play of a game. The score for this contest will consist of the sum of the actual score of the out play plus the points gained from the opponent's rack.
REPEAT: Mix"ING" Up The End"ING" Contest - $2.25 shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "I', "N", and "G" in any order OTHER than "ING" somewhere within it. (e.g. PIGSNEY, GANGLION, IGNIFIED, FIGMENTS, GNOMISTS, COREIGNS, GAHNITE, UMANGITE, GINKGOES, OUTGRIN, GENOISE, WIDGEONS, etc.). Any entry with "ING" in that order will be missING out on the prize.
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $6.42 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $4.66 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
