This was the 11th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 13 players who played a total of 35 games in which we scored 25,888 points for a 739.7 point-per-game average. Of the 82 recorded bingos we played, four were phonies that went unchallenged. We welcomed our old friend Richard Fields, who is in town for a wek or two. We were happy to see a new player as well: Tess Lind joined us for the first time. We hope to see her at future sessions.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 573 points by Ed Saunders
Low Win - 342 points by Karen Lundeen
High Loss - 410 points by Ed Saunders (to his opponent's 429)
Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.4 bingos per game
Bingo Coincidence - BETAINE played by Ed Saunders; BETAINES played by Nathan Benedict.
Some interesting bingos:
- BATISTES \n pl. Sheer fabrics (played by Ed Saunders)
- KIRTLED \adj. Wearing a kirtle: a man's tunic or coat (played by Monique Kornell)
- LOBEFINS \n pl. Bony fish (played by Ed Saunders)
- TRIPOLI \n. A soft, easily crumbled rock (played by Joshua Kassel)
- WARSTLE \v. To wrestle (played by Robert Whitcomb)
Our contests for this session were for the Lowest Win, which Karen Lundeen swooped up with a 342-335 game. Our second was the "Any Letter But 'S'" contest for the highest-scoring play using a single letter. Naurlene Canterman took this one by playing an X on a TLS square for 50 points. Both Karen and Naurlene take home $8.50 prizes.
This session also featured the letter G in the ongoing Alphabet Bingo Contest in which all bingos starting with an "G" scored a point. Strangely, nobody played a bingo that began with a G, and the standings remain the same with Nathan Benedict is in the lead and Monique Kornell and Joshua Kassel tied for second. Three of the four progressive jackpots was taken this session. Ed Saunders won the Club #565 Progressive Jackpot by playing a game of 565 or more points. His 573 game netted him $6.93. Nathan Benedict finally cashed in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot by playing a bingo of 9 letters. He wins $12.35 for his play of DENATURES. Finally, Josh Kassel took the 100+ Point Play Progressive Jackpot by turning in a 107-point phony of REMOORS* to earn $4.68. The Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot remains untouched and shall have $2.25 added to it. The others will revert to zero. all shall have $2.43 added to them. As of this session, we have payed out $254.71 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (27 January) shall feature the following contests:
- Add 2 Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who makes the highest-scoring play by adding two tiles to the front or back of a word (e.g., adding ES to JOSH to form JOSHES; adding AS to WAKEN to form AWAKENS; adding AD to MIXES to form ADMIXES, etc.).
