This was the third session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by a light crowd of 8 players that included Judith and Robert Whitcomb, who have been gone all summer and are now back in the mild climes of Southern Arizona. It was great to see them both! We played a total of 21 games in which we scored 15,270 points for a 727.1 point-per-game average. Of the 45 bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 463 points by Bob Yarmchuk
Low Win - 318 points by Karen Lundeen
High Loss - 383 points by both Karen Lundeen and Ed Saunders
Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 1.667 bingos-per-game
Some interesting bingos:
- AMOSITE \n. A type of asbestos (played by Monique Kornell)
- CLADIST \n. A taxonomist who uses clades in classifying life forms (played by Robert Whitcomb)
- ESCHEAT \v. To confiscate (played by Ed Saunders)
- GAMINES \n pl. Tomboys (played by Robert Whitcomb)
- SAVARIN \n. A yeast cake baked in a ring mold (played by Ed Saunders)
Interesting news for the session includes a strange ruling on a situation that arose regarding a tile that came off the board. I've detailed the ruling as well as a lot of opinions on it. Check out What Is The Right Ruling?
The first contest for this session was for the Low Win, which Karen Lundeen picked up with a 318 point win over her opponent's 311. The next contest was the "Start Like It Ends" contest for the highest play that began and ended with the same letter. Despite several entries, Bob Yarmchuck picked this up with an 82-point play of STEADIES. Both Karen and Bob take home $6.00. None of the four progressive jackpots were won, and each shall each have $1.50 added to it. As of this session, we have payed out $41.80 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (2 December) shall feature the following contests:
- Low Win - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player with the lowest winning score
- "I Owe yoU A Contest " Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who makes the highest-scoring play that ends with the letter A, I, O, or U (e.g., AMOEBA, ANESTRI, CHORIZO, FABLIAU, etc.).
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $7.30 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.50 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
- Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $12.36 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
- 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $10.30 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
