This was the 44th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 9 players, who played a total of 20 games in which we scored 14,580 points for a 729 point-per-game average. Of the 50 recorded bingos we played, 5 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 486 points by Ed Saunders
Low Win - 347 points by Bob Yarmchuk
High Loss - 417 points by Joshua Kassel (Opponent at 421)
Bingo King - Jake Jacobs and Ed Saunders for each averaging 2 bingos per game
Some interesting bingos:
- ARENOSE \adj. Sandy (played by Ed Saunders)
- AUGITES \n pl. Certain Minerals (played by Bob Yarmchuk )
- QUANTILE \n. Any of the values of a random variable that divides a frequency distribution (played by Ed Saunders)
- SCORIAE \n pl. The refuse of a smelted metal or ore (played by Lewis Saul)
This session featured two contests. The first was the "Beware the Ides of September" Contest, an overly complicated contest in honor of the fact that September 15 is 6 months away from March 15 -- The Ides of March -- a day you should fear if your name is Julius Caesar. The rules were that the winner was the player who made the highest scoring play after his or his opponent's play of 6 or 15 points. In the case of a tie (which we had) a coin toss would determine the winner. We had several entrants:
Naurlene Canterman: I played OAT (15 pts), Lewis played FAX (33 pts), then I scored 80 pts "MESSAGE"
Bob Yarmchuk: I played GRAIL for 15 & then VOLARES* for 80.
Josh Kassel: I played DEE for 6 followed by "PERTAIN" for 79
Ed Saunders: Rex played LAP for 15, I played "INSURER" for 73
Monique Kornell: I played TON for 6, then my opponent played YAP for 23, then I played "ARISE" for 27.
As stated in the original contest rules, in the case of a tie, a winner would be chosen by a random flip of a coin. Although my original instinct was to just pick Naurlene's entry as winner over Bob Yarmchuck's entry of a phony he played off some unsuspecting soul, I did indeed flip a coin; Naurlene was "Tails" on said coin, and tails is what came up. The other contest was for High Win, which Ed Saunders picked up with a 486 point game. Naurlene
and Ed take home $6.25 prizes.
Ed Saunders picked up the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot with a 114 point Double-Double of QUANTILE and takes home $1.68. The remaining progressive jackpots shall have $1.68 added to them. Finally, the "10 Useful Letters" contest saw four players score points. We now have five players on the board, with Joshua Kassel in first. For standings and rules, click here. As of this session, we have payed out $869.01 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (22 September) shall feature the following contests:
- "Low Win" Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who plays the lowest scoring winning game.
- "Blackjack Scrabble" Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player makes the highest scoring play following a turn in which he or she scores 21 points (blackjack!) To qualify for this prize, you must note your 21 point play and the play and point value of your subsequent play (e.g., "I scored 21 for JO, then played SCANDAL for 82 on the next turn"). In the case of a tie, an impartial observer (Josh on vacation in the north woods in Wisconsin) shall flip a coin to determine the winner.
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $2.64 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
- Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $27.70 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
- 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.68 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
- 10 Useful Letters Contest - This session's "Useful Letters" are U and Z. Every bingo you play beginning with U or Z scores you points. For standings and rules, click here.
