This was the 27th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by a light crowd of 6 players, who played a total of 18 games in which we scored 13,428 points for a 746 point-per-game average. Of the 46 recorded bingos we played, 2 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 553 points by Ed Saunders
Low Win - 371 points by Naurlene Canterman
High Loss - 443 points by Karen Lundeen (Opponent at 449)
Bingo Kings - Ed Saunders and Robert Whitcomb for both averaging 2.167 bingos per game
Frustrating Nongo - Ed Saunders had QWERTYS on his rack, but could not find a home for those keys on his board.
10 Alert - Robert Whitcomb had a very rare 10-letter bingo, played through a Triple Word Score, no less. He extended ANT to form ANTAGONIST for 83 points.
Know Your QZs - Naurlene Canterman had CAZIQUE on her rack but was not certain it was a valid word and missed playing one of only 6 natural bingos containing both the Q and the Z (BEZIQUE, CAZIQUE, MEZQUIT, QUETZAL, QUEZALS, SQUEEZE)
Vowelitis Victim - Joshua Kassel reports that 14 out of 19 of his last tiles were vowels. Adding insult to injury, one of the five consonants was the Q, which he was stuck with in the end. That's 74% of his end tiles as vowels; 78% if you consider the unplayable Q.
Some interesting bingos:
- MURIATE \n. Chloride
(played by Ed Saunders)
- SHOALER \adj. Shallower (played by Robert Whitcomb)
- UNITAGE \n. Amount in units (played by Robert Whitcomb)
- VAGARIES \n pl. Whims (played by Yusupha Jow)
This session featured two contests. The first was the "CH Contest" for the highest play containing the thile C and H played together. We had only two entries for this contest: CHANT by Ed Saunders for 26 points and CHIP by Yusupha Jow for 42. Yusupha wins it. The second contest was for the Low Win. Naurlene Canterman won this with a 371 point win -- an unusually high scoring low win for the session. It should be noted that Naurlene Canterman and Karen Lundeen did play a game that resulted in a lower-scoring tie game (330 to 330). A tie, however, is not a win, and this game did not qualify for the contest.
This session featured the letter W in the ongoing Alphabet Bingo Contest in which all bingos starting with an "W" scored a point. Karen Lundeen and ed Saunders scored this week, and Nathan Benedict is in 1st place, with Joshua Kassel in 2nd.Click here for Alphabet Bingo standings and rules!
Two folks turned in bingos of 9 or more letters this week and shall split the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot. As noted above, Robert Whitcomb played a 10-letter play of ANTAGONIST for 83 points. Ed Saunders played a 9-letter bingo of UNLEADING (played through n existing AD on the board) for 64 points. They shall split the $4.86 Jackpot. Ed Saunders nailed the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot as well. His play SHANTIES scored 149 points as well as earned him the $12.34 prize. The other two progressive jackpots shall each have $1.31 added to them. As of this session, we have payed out $598.38 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
