This session featured two contests. The first was the "No Squares" Contest for the highest scoring play that did not use a bonus square on the board. This was a tight contest, with Joshua Kassel's JO for 28 being beaten out by Lewis Saul's YOWS for 29. The second contest of the evening was the "Also a Brand Name" Contest for the the highest scoring play of a word that is also used as a formal noun in a company's brand name. We had a few entries on this one, with Ed Saunders winning it:
Ed Saunders: VILLAGER for 80 points (VILLAGER Hotels, Mercury VILLAGER Automobiles)
Josh Kassel: DICKIES for 78 points (It is the name of a pants)
Lewis Saul: INHALER for 76 points (Vick's INHALER)
Naurlene Canterman: JOY for 18 points (Dishwashing Product Name)
Lewis
and Ed take home $3.25 prizes.
Two of the progressive jackpots were won this session. Joshua Kassel won the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot with a 106 phony play of ROQUISH*. Lewis Saul picked up the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot for a 62 point bingo of RATIONALS. As both these jackpots were also won last week, they only earn each player $0.93, but that's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. The remaining progressive jackpots shall have $0.93 added to them. Finally, the "10 Useful Letters" contest saw one players score points. We now have four players on the board -- all with one point -- and 7 sessions remaining; it's anyone's contest at this point. For standings and rules, click here. As of this session, we have payed out $854.83 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (15 September) shall feature the following contests:
- "High Win" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who plays the highest winning game.
- "Beware the Ides of September " Contest - We're exactly 6 months away from March 15 (The Ides of March) -- the date Caesar met The Reaper. A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player makes the highest scoring play following a turn (either yours or your opponent's) that scores 6 or 15 points. To qualify for this prize, you must note the 6 or 15 point play and the play and point value of your subsequent play (e.g., "I scored 15 for ANI, then my opponent played a 34 point play, then I played RETSINA for 72" or "My opponent played AA for 6 and then I played XEROTIC for 92"). In the case of a tie, an impartial observer shall flip a coin to determine the winner.
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $0.96 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
- Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $25.99 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
- 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
- 10 Useful Letters Contest - This session's "Useful Letters" are O and X. Every bingo you play beginning with O or X scores you points. For standings and rules, click here.
