This was the 47th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 7 players, who played a total of 17 games in which we scored 12,982 points for a 763.6 point-per-game average. Of the 46 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies that remained unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 597 points by Lewis Saul -- his highest of the season!
Low Win - 340 points by Joshua Kassel
High Loss - 418 points by Lewis Saul (Opponent at 445)
Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.167 bingos per game
QUIETING Down Play - Naurlene Canterman notes that Ed Saunders blocked her play of QUIETING, which would have scored over 100 points. Ed Saunders counters, "She was preparing to play QUIETING through an existing 'I' on the board for a 2x2 which could have been worth 122 points when I - looking in vain for a spot to play VENISON - noticed the open 'I' and dropped my own 2x2 ENVISION for 94 points."
Some interesting bingos:
- ANKERITE \n. A mineral (played by Ed Saunders)
- ETALONS \n pl. Optical instruments
(played by Lewis Saul)
- LISENTE \n pl. Monetary units of Lesotho; plural of SENTE (played by Monique Kornell)
- PEASCODS \n pl. Pea Pods; variant of
PEASECODS(played by Ed Saunders)
- RADIALE \n. A bone of the carpus (played by Karen Lundeen)
The first of the evening's contest was the Close Loss contest, awarded to the player whose losing score was the cosest to his or her opponent's winning score (we also like to call this the "every cloud has a silver lining" contest). Her 8 point loss in a game of 332-340 to Joshua Kassel was worth something after all. Also the session featured the "Present Progressive" contest for the highest scoring play of a verb in the present progressive tense (ending with -ING). We had three significant entries for this contest, with Monique Kornell's 95 point play of TIERING beating Josh Kassel's 90 point WINCING and Naurlene Canterman's 66 point TEARING. Naurlene and monique each take home $4.00.
Monique also picked up the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot with a 101 point play of PADDOCK. Lewis Saul wins the Club 565 Progressive Jackpot for a game of 565 or more points by turning in a 597 point game, his highest in some time. $1.12 shall be added to the other three progressive jackpots as well. The "10 Useful Letters" contest saw four players score points. We now have eight players on the board, with Ed Saunders rocketing to first place. For standings and rules, click here. As of this session, we have payed out $932.79 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (13 October) shall feature the following contests:
- "Yom Kippur " Contest - ~The 13th is Yom Kippur. A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who plays the highest scoring play beginning with Y or K.
- "NO GO" Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who plays the highest scoring word beginning with NO- or ending with -GO (e.g., NOBBIER, NONFOOD, EMBARGO, HIDALGO, etc.)
