This was the 9th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 12 players who played a total of 29 games in which we scored 21,076 points for a 726.76 point-per-game average. Of the 59 recorded bingos we played, four were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 491 points by Ed Saunders
Low Win - 328 points by Daniel Forrest
High Loss - 413 points by Monique Kornell
Bingo King - Nathan Benedict for averaging 1.6 bingos per game
Assisted Bingo King - All 9 of Ed Saunders' bingos this session were
eight letters in length; not a single one was played without playing through
a previously-played word.
High Bingo-Free Game - Bob Yarmchuk played a 420-point game; he did
so without playing a single bingo
Some interesting bingos:
- ARISTAE \n pl. Bristlelike structures or appendages
(played by Lewis Saul)
- AUGITES \n pl. Types of minerals (played by Bob
Yarmchuck)
- BORNITE \n. An ore of copper (played by Nathan
Benedict)
- CELERITY \n. Swiftness (played by Ed Saunders)
- SIENITES \n. Igneous rocks (played by Nathan Benedict)
- VERMEILS \n pl. Red colors (played by Ed Saunders)
From the "Why The Hell Is This Bingo a Phony?" File - Anyone
from the Southwest will recognize the ubiquitous milagro ("miracle"
in Spanish) or ex-voto ("from my vow" in Latin) -- a small, charm-like
metal image offered to a deity or saint as a form of prayer or wish, or in
thanks for desires fulfilled. While you will see many a MILAGRO*
in Tucson, it is not an acceptable word in Scrabble (played by Judy Carlock).

(Pictured above: MILAGROS* -- According to the Dictionary
Committee, they do not exist)
Our first contest this session was the IN and OUT contest for the highest-scoring word beginning with IN or OUT. although Lewis Saul gave him a run for his money by putting down a 67 pointer of INVADERS, Bob Yarmchuk took it with an 84 point play of INQUIRED. Lewis did, however, win the second contest of the night: the RE-play Contest for the highest scoring play beginning with RE- that can also stand alone as a word without the RE prefix. Scoring 70 points for doing so, Lewis put down REMODELS. Both Bob and Lewis take home $8.50 prizes.
This session also featured the letter E in the ongoing Alphabet Bingo Contest in which all bingos starting with an "E" scored a point. Three folks scored in this contest. Nathan Benedict is still in the lead, with Monique Kornell running a close second. Click here for Alphabet Bingo standings and rules!
The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot for any single play of 100 or more points goes to Monique Kornell for a 102 point play of WEARERS, which was a Double-Double in one direction and a Double Word Play in another. Monique almost shared this prize with Nathan Benedict, who turned in the play ARIDEST for 99 points. Nathan's 1 point deficiency allows Monique to take home the $4.12 prize alone. The other three progressive jackpots shall each have $2.25 added to them. As of this session, we have payed out $195.29 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (13 January) shall feature the following contests:
- High Game - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to
the player who turns in the highest winning score.
- All Vowels/Consonants Contest - A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the player who makes the highest-scoring play of a word
that is composed of all vowels or all consonants (e.g., AA, HM, OE, CWM, EAU,
CRWTH, TSKTSKS, etc.). The letter Y does not count as a vowel in this contest.
Alphabet Bingo Contest - The Alphabet Bingo Letter for this
session is F. Each bingo beginning with F scores one point (click
here for standings and rules)
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $5.99 plus an eighth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's
dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single
play
- Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $2.25 plus an eighth of the
session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points
in a single game.
- 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $7.67 plus an eighth of the
session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more
letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
