This was the 17th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 12 players, who played a total of 32 games in which we scored 23,424 points for a 732 point-per-game average. Of the 73 recorded bingos we played, 5 were phonies that went unchallenged. We welcomed old friend and visiting player Jason Sommer, who is in town renting out a property.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 710 points by Nathan Benedict
Low Win - 323 points by Judith Whitcomb
High Loss - 411 points by Monique Kornell
Bingo King - Nathan Benedict for averaging 1.6 bingos per game
Let Me Repeat That High Game - That's 710 points, Nathan's highest-ever scoring game and the highest scoring game we have ever seen at club.
You can review the board by using this link (Note: does not render
properly using the Netscape browser). The S in IGNEOUS and the N in
REUNITER (his opponent's only bingo) were blanks (which are not an
option on this web tool).
Some interesting bingos:
- ADENINE \n.
An alkaloid
(played by Robert Whitcomb)
- GALLIOTS \n pl. Small galleys
(played by Ed Saunders)
- NITRIDES \v. To convert into a compound of hydrogen
(played by Naurlene Canterman)
- PEMMICAN \n. A dried combination of meat and lard and the base for RUBBABOO stew (played by Judy Carlock)
- PALMIER \adj. Comparative of PALMY -- marked by prosperity. [*Note: Although one of my favorite pastries, the dictionary committee has not recognized PALMIERS* as being playable] (played by Robert Whitcomb)
- VERISMO \n. Realism in art or literature (played by Jason Sommer)
The first contest of the session was the "K's okay" Contest for the highest-scoring play using the K tile. Five folks had entries for this contest, with Ed saunders taking it home. The entries were:
RETRACK for 88 points by Ed saunders
BEKNOTS for 80 points by Monique Kornell
STRIKER for 69 points by Judith Whitcomb
PAWKY for 46 points by Nathan Benedict (Played in the course of his 710 game at that!)
The second contest was the
"It's NO contest" Contest for the highest-scoring play using the tile N and O played in that order. Monique Kornell takes that contest with the same word she entered in the "K's Okay" contest. The entries were:
BEKNOTS for 80 points by Monique Kornell
SNORTER for 68 by Judith Whitcomb
NOTHING for 12 points by Naurlene Canterman
Monique and Ed both take home $8.50 prizes.
This session also featured the letter M in the ongoing Alphabet Bingo Contest in which all bingos starting with an "M" scored a point. Although a high-probability tile, only Ed Saunders played a bingo starting with M. Nathan Benedict remain in the lead, and Monique Kornell and Ed Saunders are tied for second.Click here for Alphabet Bingo standings and rules!
Of the four progressive jackpots, Nathan won two of them. His 710 point game snagged him the $8.99 Club 565 Progressive Jackpot for playing a game well above 565 points. During that game he had the occasion to play a Triple-Triple play of COVETOUS, which netted him 176 points as well as $24.15 for the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot. Those two jackpots will roll over to zero, and the other two shall have $2.25 added to them. As of this session, we have payed out $407.98 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (10 March) shall feature the following contests:
- "I C a contest " Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the highest-scoring play that ends with the suffix -IC (e.g., COLONIC, GIGANTIC, ZYGOTIC, etc.).
- "Any 6" Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the highest-scoring play made by playing any 6 tiles.
Alphabet Bingo Contest - The Alphabet Bingo Letter for this
session is N. Each bingo beginning with N scores one point (click
here for standings and rules)
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $4.31 plus an eighth of the session's
