+ Session NotesThis was our 46th session of the season. Eleven players were in attendance, including a new player named Sally Shumaker, who read about us in the Tucson Weekly. Sally is recovering from foot surgery and has the down time needed to work on her Scrabble game. Welcome Sally! We played 28 games in which we scored 20,139 points, for a 719.25 points-per-game average and a 369.63 points-per-player-per-game average. We played 64 bingos this session, of which only one was a (very plausible) phony that went unchallenged. The phony was crudite* which is no good without an S (CRUDITES). Monique Kornell is the top player for the night with a 4-1 +561 score card. Karen Although only in third place, Karen Lundeen picks up a mess of rating points by taking down some serious competition. Way to go! Ed Saunders and Nathan Benedict share the Bingo King crown by each turning in 10 bingos in six games. On the subject of bingos, Josh notes his bingo of ANTEATER was in no way inspired by the "University of Irvine Anteaters" t-shirt worn by Nathan Benedict that evening. The High Win contest was swooped up by Nathan Benedict with a 567-pointer. The Fall Forward contest for the highest-scoring play containing a word relating to the autumn foliage was won by Monique Kornell with a 72-point play of SOOTIER, which justified thusly: "Burning leaves made the air SOOTIER." Monique's other entry -- an 80-pointer justified by the sentence "Once the leaves started falling, they were glad for their lawn SERVICE." -- was a bit too much of a reach and was not considered by this judge. Monique's dubious win was made possible by the fact that she was the only player to turn in an entry for this contest. Make sure to give her a hard time for this. Both Nathan and Monique take home $4.50. Nathan won the 9+ Bingo Jackpot with an 86-point play of MITIGATED. He takes home $2.38, and this jackpot rolls over to zero. No other jackpots were won, and $1.25 will be added to the remaining three. Nobody scored any points in The Alphabet Bingo Contest, and Ed remains in 1st place. Next Session (10
October) will feature the following contests: + Bingos by PlayerBelow are the bingos played during the 03 October 2003 session at National Scrabble Association Club #565. Phoney bingos are listed in red lower case. Nathan Benedict - 10 Bingos |
