Session Notes:
For our 29th session
of the season, 12 players racked up a total of 19,547 points over 27 games. We saw
50 bingos played this session; 3 of
those bingos were phonies that went unchallenged.
We welcomed a new player: Suresh Sampath. Suresh
read about us in one of the various listings we have printed up somewhere or
other and decided to drop in for a few games. Although he is brand new to
organized Scrabble, Suresh seems to have an intuitive sense of the game.
Welcome Suresh!
Visiting us for the first time as well was Muriel
Sparrow. Muriel is a seasoned player who directs NSA Club #490 in New
York City as well as a recent transplant to Phoenix. Muriel was visiting
Tucson and found the time to visit us.
Naurlene was the top player of the
evening with a 5-1 +136 scorecard. Ed Saunders and Josh Kassel share the Bingo
King crown by both turning in eight bingos in four games. Karen Lundeen took
the High Win prize
this session with a score of 443. The
"High Three" contest winner for the highest-scoring play made with
only three tiles was Monique Kornell. Monique beat out Naurlene's 60-point GOX
play by playing "ILZ" through an existing L for a 66-point score for ZILL.
Naurlene, Ed, and Josh get pats on the back. Karen and Monique win $4.50
prizes.
It was "E" Night in the Alphabet Bingo contest.
Despite the commonality of bingos beginning with E, only three E Bingos
(ELECTORS, ELECTRIC, and ELOPING) were played. For Alphabet Bingo rules and details,
Triple-Triple play or a bingo with 9 or more letters, and we will add $2.50 to
each of these jackpots.
As a reminder, Jeannette Kaufman
will be hosting a potluck fundraiser featuring Scrabble games galore this
Sunday to help benefit the Perfect Love No Kill Animal Shelter. If you wish to
join or can make a donation for this worthy cause, please contact Jeannette. Click
here for details about this event.
Next Session (12 June) will feature the following contests:
- NO Contest - A prize will be awarded for the highest-scoring
word that begins with the letters NO (e.g., NOCK, NOTATE,
NONZERO, etc.) (~a quarter of dues collected)
- "High Four" Contest - A prize will be awarded to the
highest-scoring play that is made by playing four tiles. This can be
the result of playing a four-letter word (e.g., SUQS, ZAGS, etc.)
or
extension or hook play (e.g., adding A to the beginning and ING to
the ending of BORT to form ABORTING). (~a quarter of
dues collected).
- Triple-Triple Jackpot - A jackpot of $19.75 plus an eighth of
the evening's dues will be awarded to any player(s) who scores a Triple-Triple
Play.
- 9+ Bingo Jackpot - A jackpot of $26.75 plus an eighth of the
evening's dues will be awarded to any player(s) who scores a bingo containing
nine or more letters.
- Alphabet Bingo - The Alphabet Bingo letter for this session is "F."
For each bingo you play that begins with the letter F, you score one point.
