Session Notes:
This was our 34th session of the season. We had
9 players compete in a total of 22 games in which 15,779 points were scored for an overall average of
717.2 points per game, or 358.6 points per player per game. We saw 44 bingos played this
session, 5 of which were phonies that went unchallenged.
Our top player of the evening was
Winter (no last name). Winter is a Texas-based player who drove out to Reno for
the big tournament last weekend. He decided to pay us a visit on his way back
home. Winter comes to us with an NSA rating of 1309, which he was able to push
to 1326 for our club. We wish him well and thank him for visiting us.
The Monsoon Madness contest for the highest
scoring play containing a word relating to the monsoon had a few qualifying
entries. The rules for this
contest stated to "be creative. If you can justify a word as
relating to the much needed monsoon, we'll accept it as an entry. We had
three "creative" entries:
1. SHAITANS as in "The natives held the SHAITANS
responsible for the terrible monsoon floods." (Ed
Saunders for 61 points)
2. EARLIER as in "Due to high water demand, Tucson is
hoping for the monsoon season to arrive EARLIER."
(Winter for 66 points)
3. DARKENS as in "The sky DARKENS during the
monsoon." (Vic Kaye for 73 points)
4. SEALING as in "Residents of Tucson prepared for
monsoon season by SEALING windows and doors."
(Winter for 73 points)
Since our illustrious co-director, Monique Kornell, was out of town for this
session, she had the pleasure of selecting the winner after being sent the list
of entries (without knowing who played them, of course). Vic Kaye wins the
prize. The Low Win contest goes to Ed Saunders for a 333-point winning game.
Congrats!
Jackpot updates! The Triple-Triple jackpot
is still up for grabs and now sitting at an impressive $30.50. Nobody won the
the 9+ Bingo Jackpot or the "Deja Bingo" Jackpot, and both now stand
at $1.75. Nobody scored in the Alphabet Bingo contest, and Ed Saunders
remains in 1st place.
Next Session (17
July) will feature the following contests:
- 400 Contest - A prize will be awarded to the player who scores
closest to 400 points during one of his or her game. The low score favors the
high score (e.g., a 399 point game wins over a 401 point game). In the case of
a tie, a director will flip a coin or use another arbitrary method to determine
the winner. (~a quarter of dues collected)
- Preposition Contest - A prize will be awarded to the
highest-scoring play that contains a preposition (IN, THROUGH, TOWARD,
BY, etc.). The preposition can be formed by making a parallel play or as
a standalone word. Make sure to write down all the words formed during the
play. (~a quarter of
dues collected).
- Triple-Triple Jackpot - A jackpot of $30.50 plus an eighth of
the evening's dues will be awarded to any player(s) who scores a Triple-Triple
Play.
- 9+ Bingo Jackpot - A jackpot of $1.75 plus a portion of the evening's
dues will be awarded to any player(s) who scores a bingo containing
nine or more letters.
"Deja Bingo" Jackpot - A jackpot of $1.75 plus a
portion of the evening's dues will be awarded to any
player(s) who plays the same bingo more than once in a session.
- Alphabet Bingo - The Alphabet Bingo letter for this session is "K."
For each bingo you play that begins with the letter K, you score one point. ($26 Jackpot)
