Session Notes:
Before launching
into this week's session, we have an item of interest. Yusupha Jow and Joshua
Kassel visited Ms. June Porter's school Scrabble club at Mesquite Elementary
in Vail this past week. They met with ten up and coming Scrabble players
in the 5-8 grade range. Yus and Josh gave a short speech about competitive
Scrabble and gave the kids packets of basic word lists. Also, Josh purchased
four copies of the OSPD3, which he presented as a gift from our Scrabble club
to theirs. After games with the kids, everyone was presented with a certificate
of appreciation, and then we and the kids retired for juice and cookies.
A fun time was had by all, and nobody should be surprised to see some of
these youngsters attending our club in the coming years.
This school
Scrabble club is a great environment. Ms. Porter remarked that since starting
it, the kids have shown a marked increase in vocabulary and math skills.
However, due to Arizona being 49th or 50th in education spending, Ms. Porter
has had to pay for all expenses out of her own pocket. On a teacher's salary,
she should not have to do this, and we would like to look at ways our club
can contribute to these kids' activity. In the coming weeks, we'll be passing
the hat at Cub. We encourage all to contribute generously. Yusupha, Monique,
and Josh will be attending this school Scrabble club again next week
on Wednesday April 2 from 2-4PM. If you are interested in coming out to meet
the kids, contact Josh.
This session
saw 19 players compete in a total of 42 games. We saw a total of 29,761
points scored. 97 bingos were played this session. Of those bingos, five
were phonies that went unchallenged.
Nathan Benedict
again proved his Scrabble prowess by turning in a perfect 7-0 +880 scorecard
to be the night's top player. Our prize for Low Win goes to Jeannette Kaufman
with a 307 point victory. Bob Whitcomb won the X Hook contest by playing
the word MAX and hooking the X to MI to form MIX. Both
Jeannette and Bob pick up $9.50 for their efforts.
Lewis Saul
nailed the Triple-Triple Jackpot with the play ASTRINGE for 131 points.
Unfortunately, Nathan wiped out the Triple-Triple Jackpot last session, so
Lewis picks up a prize of $4.75; it's not a lot, but it beats a poke in
the eye with a sharp stick. Nobody won the 9+ Bingo Jackpot, and the prize
for doing so is now at $14.25.
Two reminders
this week:
1. Our club plays tournament Scrabble. Please play your games as
you would in a rated tournament. Both players should play their turns according
to NSA Official
Tournament Rules.
2. Despite the gripes about the food, we are extremely lucky to have Denny's
allow us to continue to meet at their establishment. Please respect the fact
that there are other patrons by keeping the noise level down. Also, please
show your support for this business by ordering food from them and tipping
our servers well.
Next
session (6 March 2003) will feature prizes for:
- High Win (a quarter of dues collected)
- "What's On The Menu" Contest - A prize will be awarded
to the player who plays the highest-scoring word that is a menu item at
Denny's (e.g., OMELETTE, STEAK, HOTCAKES, COFFEE,
etc.). Blanks count (a quarter of dues collected).
- Triple-Triple plays (an eighth of dues collected)
- 9+ Bingos ($14.25 plus an eighth of dues collected)
