Session Notes:

This session saw 18 players compete in a total of 39 games. We saw a total of 29,986 points scored. 113 bingos were played this session. Of those bingos, 9 were phonies that went unchallenged.

We bid farewell this session to John Jensen, who joined us for his last time ever. John is headed to the beautiful island of Maui for a four year stint with the Forest Service. In his honor, everyone was bedecked in leis (who says you can't get "leid" at a Scrabble club?). As a keepsake, we were happy to present him with a gift of an address book with all our addresses included in it. This way, he has no excuse not to stay in touch. While his stay in Tucson was short, John made a lasting impression. We will all miss his kindness and humor, and we wish him our very best as he departs for paradise.

We were happy to welcome three guest players as well. Joining us from Minnesota were Lisa Odom (a top 100 player) and Steve Pellinen. Steve and Lisa were in town for last weekend's Phoenix tournament. Making a vacation of it, they took a day trip to Tubac and decided to drop in on us. Additionally, this session saw John Hart's familiar face. John (another top 100 player) also played in Phoenix last weekend. John is looking a bit pale (the lack of sunshine in Portland does that), but his visit to Arizona shoudl help that.

Nathan swept the prize pool last night, proving that one can put himself through law school by playing Scrabble, by picking up a total of $56.50. Nathan hit the Triple-Triple Jackpot with a 122-point play of URALITES. He also captured the High K Play contest with a 112-point play of FLANKED, barely edging out Naurlene Canterman's equally impressive 109-point play of SLICKED.  Finally, Nathan captured the High Game prize with an impressive 603 pointer. Despite his best efforts, though, the top player of the night was Yusupha Jow, who turned in a perfect 3-0 +216 scorecard. Rex Kremer won the contest for the highest-scoring non-bingo with QUAKED (which also put him in the running for the High K Play), which netted him a cool 70 points. Nobody nailed the 9+ Bingo Jackpot, and that prize now stands at $9.50.

Next session (27 February 2003) will feature prizes for:
- Low Win (a quarter of dues collected)
- X Hook - A prize will be awarded to the player who plays the highest-scoring word by hooking an X onto the front or end of a preexisting word to form two X words (e.g., playing HEX in front of EROTICS to form XEROTICS or playing TAXI behind DUPLE to form DUPLEX). In order to win this prize you must hook a complete X word to the front or back of another complete word. Designating a blank as an X counts. To prepare, see the "X Hooks" list Jake Jacobs kindly provided in the Downloads section.
- Triple-Triple plays (an eighth of dues collected)
- 9+ Bingos  ($9.50 plus an eighth of dues collected)
