Session Notes:
First and foremost, there will be no Club session next
week as it is Thanksgiving. Be thankful, eat yourself silly, and have a wonderful
holiday! We will meet again on December 5.
This session saw 13 players. We were joined by Kevin The, a reporter from
The Arizona Daily Star who is writing an article on the club that is scheduled
to appear in the Saturday, November 30 edition. Accompanied by Renee the photgrapher,
Kevin interviewed several folks and went on to play two games where he held
his own quite nicely. Although his attendance at club was work-related, we
welcome him and invite him to come back!
We bid a fond adieu to our visiting Scrabble player-cum-cyclist, John Hart,
who will be competing in this weekend's El Tour De Tucson race before headed
back to greener pastures in Oregon. His next appearance in town will be at
the December tournament.
Ed Saunders was top dog last night, turning in a perfect 4-0 +152 card.
Nathan Benedict was once again the bingo king, turning in 12 bingos that
included such gems as GLITZIER (86 points) and SAPONITE (70 points) for a
2.4 bingos-per-game average.
As a final farewell, John captured the High Game prize. Five bingos helped
him secure a 656-point game, a new club record. Ed Saunders captured the prize
for the highest Double Word Score play with a 97-point Double-Double of WALTZES,
barely beating out Judith Whitcomb's 90-point MORAINES. Nobody captured a
Triple-Triple play, and the pot for doing so is now at $3. Additionally, nobody
played a bingo of nine or more letters, and that pot is now at $3 as well.
Next session (05 December) will feature prizes for:
- Highest game (a quarter of dues collected)
- Triple-Triple plays ($3 plus an eighth of dues collected)
- 9+ Bingos ($3 plus an eighth of dues collected)
- Highest-scoring word that contains a V (e.g., DAVEN, ADVECT, VAMPERS,
etc.). To qualify for this
prize, you must actually play a V tile. Hooking onto a previously-played
V word or designating a blank as
a V do not count (a quarter of dues collected)
