Session Notes:

This session disproved the old adage that lightning never strikes twice by two players nailing Triple-Triple plays. Lewis Saul was the first with a 176-point play of SCENDING. A bit longer into the night, Linda Bredel racked up another Triple-Triple by playing through the V in VAV to put down deviater, a 178-point phony that went unchallenged and therefore counts. Lewis and Linda will split the $64.50 Triple-Triple pot. Congratulations to both!

Now that the Triple-Triple pot has been won, we will zero out the pot and introduce a new "9+ Bingos" prize as well. A cash prize will be awarded for any bingo played that consists of nine or more letters (e.g., hooking PEATING onto apreviously-played RE to form REPEATING). This prize will be equal to an eighth of the dues collected that session. If nobody hits it, the prize will roll over to the next session.

Nathan Benedict was the bingo king, turning in 13 bingos for an impressive 2.6 bingos per game average. Ed Saunders was the king of the arcane bingo, playing SETSCREWS and BACKFITS, both of which were unsuccessfully challenged.

Lewis Saul scores the prize for high game by turning in a 641-pointer. Josh wins the prize for the highest-scoring word that starts and ends with the same letter with a 77-point play of SOUNDINGS (although Naurlene had an unplayable AQUARIA that would have probably scored more). Other notable plays in this contest included:
- SHINERS (73 points) by Naurlene Canterman
- eglatare (phony, 63 points) by Nathan Benedict
- STRYDERS (61 points) by Ed Saunders

The eglatare play merits a note. When Nathan played it, Monique Kornell challenged it. The word judge ruled the word was acceptable and the game continued. However, later in the game Yusupha Jow wandered over and looked the word up himself, discovering that the word judge had erroneously adjudicated (the correct word is EGLATERE).  When this happens and the game has progressed beyond the next turn, the NSA's Erroneous Adjudication rule comes into play:
If you lose a turn inappropriately because of an erroneous adjudication, and you notify the Director before leaving the tournament area for the day, your cumulative point spread will be increased by an amount equal to the value of the play (as verified by the score sheet and your opponent) plus 25 points.

As a result, Monique's cumulative point spread for the session was increased by the value of the play (63 points) plus 25. This brings up two points:
1. John Hart's mechanical ability to anagram anything you throw at him notwithstanding, word judges are human. As a player, you are entitled to ask for a second opinion on any challenge you or your opponent makes.
2. It is important to keep track of every word and point value that you AND your opponent play not only because of erroneous adjudication, but because of scoring disagreements, recounts, etc. If there is a scoring disagreement, the benefit of the doubt will go to the player who has properly recorded his or her game on a turn-by-turn basis. If you d not have game score sheets, we will provide as many as you need; please use them.

And SEGUEING (a bingo played last night by Lewis Saul) into a similar topic, I need to request that all players please make sure ALL sections of their score sheets are CORRECTLY filled out before turning them in at the end of the night. Many of the score sheets have been missing things like opponent's rating, number of your bingos in game (write "0" if you did not make one), scores, point spread, etc. Please complete these to avoid me having any confusion about your results and to avoid forcing me to fill in the numbers on Friday morning, when I am at my grumpiest and most confused

Next session (21 November) will feature prizes for:
- Highest game (a quarter of dues collected)
- Triple-Triple plays (an eighth of dues collected)
- 9+ Bingos  (an eighth of dues collected)
- Highest-scoring Double Word play. Double-Doubles plays count as well (a quarter of dues collected)
